Modern, Mobile Computing in Practical Terms for the Office Furniture Industry

So you've got a brand new iPad and you're wondering how best to use it for your business. Well, you're in luck! This quick post will demonstrate a typical way to integrate this device into a simple and efficient workflow.
8:00 a.m. - You start your day with a cup of coffee and iPad in hand, though you'll likely need to put your coffee down since the iPad is really best used with both hands! First and foremost, you open up your e-mail. With the iPad's ridiculously simple e-mail interface, you can easily navigate one, or several accounts within a few minutes. After deleting the Viagra and Rolex messages, you can quickly type a response using the on-screen keyboard.
8:30 a.m. - After your e-mail communication is done, you can now browse the morning news from your website of choice, or use the built-in RSS reader to see the latest news from specific sites that you frequent. For those who aren't aware of RSS and have never used it, it stands for Really Simple Syndication. It's simply a way to 'subscribe' to a frequently-updated site's content. CNN for example, provides RSS feeds for all of their sections. This allows you to view their top stories, generally including a Title and Synopsis. One of the most popular RSS Reader apps for the iPhone and iPad is Feedler.
8:45 a.m. - As you're scanning the latest news from the Herman Miller Blog, you come across something interesting and want to share with your Twitter followers. With a simple doube-press of the 'Home' key, you can launch your Twitter app of choice, and quickly hammer paste a link to the article, or better yet, before you do that...
9:00 a.m. - You're so compelled about this news from Herman Miller that you decide to post your summary of it to your own blog. You not only cover the facts of news (and of course link to the main story) but you can also demonstrate to your customers and colleagues why you think this is big news, and how it'll affect your customers. So, once again, you double-press the 'Home' key and launch the iPad Wordpress App (which you've already configured to connect to your blog) and hammer out a quick post.
9:30 a.m. - With your fresh new blog post, you can now tweet a link to that, instead of linking directly back to Herman Miller. After all, your customers want your insight and your experience to help parse the issue.
9:45 a.m. - By now, you've not only completed your required communication, but you've also read some industry-specific news, parsed the value of it in your own blog post, and subsequently shared a link to that new post with your Twitter Followers. But long after you've done this, you r efforts will continue to resonate online.
10:00 a.m. - Google's new Caffeine Search Index has already read through your blog content, and is actively showing it when the related searches are conducted. This means that people who aren't following you on Twitter, now know who you are and what you do! Of course, if your Twitter account is integrated with your Facebook Fan Page, you've now gotten even more exposure to not only your specific blog post, but your primary sales website (which you've hopefully linked from your blog post!).
10:30 a.m. - The new traffic to your blog, coming from Google, Twitter and Facebook is now interacting with your newly added post. They're leaving comments, asking questions and engaging your expertise!
All things considered, that's not a bad way to start your work day. You've communicated, learned something, shared something and are now talking to new customers - and all without leaving your breakfast table!
One thing to note is that while I'm using the iPad (and associated Apps) in this example, you can easily insert your own device, whether Blackberry, iPhone, Laptop, or practically any other device into this same model. While the specifics might be different, the core-concept is the same.
If you've been reading this and thinking, 'wow, I should probably have a blog!' or 'I really need more information about this whole RSS thing' - feel free to contact Dijital Media to see how we can help!
p.s. If you can also replace Herman Miller in the example with your Vendor/Manufacturer/Distributor of choice. Most have RSS feeds, though I couldn't find one for Knoll.
